Scoliosis

While scoliosis is an incurable, progressive condition, it’s still treatable, and its symptoms can be managed effectively. Similar to conditions like diabetes, scoliosis requires ongoing care since it’s a battle you face for the rest of your life. Finding the best treatment, however, helps patients live a comfortable life. Chiropractic treatment is one of the best approaches for scoliosis patients since it’s natural and non-invasive. At Southeast Chiropractic: The Motion Center, we commonly treat scoliosis patients using natural treatments. Although chiropractic care won’t correct your curvature, it helps manage the symptoms.

What is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis is the abnormal curvature of the spine. It’s a spinal disorder where curves often appear “C or S-shaped.” There are four types of scoliosis, namely:

  • Idiopathic Scoliosis: Idiopathic accounts for about 80% of scoliosis cases. Idiopathic means the cause of the condition is unknown!
  • Congenital scoliosis: Congenital means you were born with the condition. It’s a rare form that affects one in ten thousand babies.
  • Syndromic or neuromuscular scoliosis affects children with neuromuscular disorders like cerebral palsy.
  • Degenerative scoliosis is adult scoliosis that occurs after forty years of age.

Symptoms of Scoliosis

Catching scoliosis early enough is essential because, as the degree of the curvature increases, it causes health problems like breathing difficulty. Observing your child’s body makes it possible to detect early signs of scoliosis. For example, you may check the following:

  • Whether your child’s eyes level is straight or tilted
  • Whether the shoulders are level or if there is a shoulder blade that protrudes higher than the other
  • If one hip is more pronounced than the other
  • Your child’s mid-ear should be lined up with the tip of the shoulder

Scoliosis symptoms depend on the degree of curvature. If the curvature is minute, you may not experience any symptoms. However, if the degree of curvature is severe, the symptoms are beyond cosmetic concerns. You may have back pain and limited mobility.

How Chiropractors Treat Scoliosis

Chiropractors can diagnose scoliosis and recommend treatments that relieve or reduce scoliosis pain. Many people opt for chiropractic care because they find non-invasive, non-drug scoliosis treatment reduces pain and strengthens the body’s core. Our chiropractor will diagnose scoliosis through family and medical history, physical examinations, and a spine X-ray. After proper diagnosis, they may use the following treatment options:

  • Chiropractic adjustment
  • Massage therapy
  • Trigger point therapy
  • Stretching exercises

Also, our chiropractic team will advise you on lifestyle and nutrition changes, such as ways to rest and move to minimize pain.
